CAMP IN DEFENSE OF BARROSO<\/strong><\/h1>

No to mines, yes to life!<\/strong><\/h2>

In August 2021, the doors of Quinta do Cruzeiro were opened to welcome friends\u00a0 and companions who share our struggle, from\u00a0 all over the country and the world. The community of Covas do Barroso welcomed them\u00a0 as\u00a0 it always welcomes all who visit us in good faith:\u00a0 with an open heart, a smile on our face and doors wide open.\u00a0<\/p>

Following this very successful and rewarding\u00a0 experience for both the visitors and the community, and since\u00a0 our struggle continues, the Camp in Defense of Covas do Barroso return\u00a0 for a second edition!\u00a0<\/p>

Between 12 and 15 August 2022, we invite once more all those who wish to join us for four days to\u00a0 share experiences and stories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Our struggle is the same but it it's also different.\u00a0 We once believed we would only have to confront the mining company and the government but we now know everything goes. We were confronted with threats, with attempts to interfere with democratic processes and shameless \"divide and conquer\" manipulation tactics. We learn not to underestimate how low the unbridled pursuit for profit can go.\u00a0<\/p>

Against the insidious tactics orchestrated by the mining lobby, we count on the support, solidarity and camaraderie of other communities who share\u00a0 in\u00a0 our struggle in Portugal and\u00a0 around the world, as well as the strength of the union of our community.\u00a0<\/p>

This year, in the face of conflict and\u00a0 war, the world is forced\u00a0 to reflect on what the \u201cenergy transition\u201d really means and its costs. We want to explore and deconstruct the \u201cenergy transition\u201d narrative\u00a0 that\u00a0 promotes unbridled extractivism and the ultimate certain exhaustion of natural resources, the destruction of rural land, and the incessant pursuit of profit. We would like to discuss our experience of the social engineering and judicial terrorism tactics we faced and our battle against the <\/b>capitalist frenzy that wants to grow at the expense of our people, our hills and our waters.<\/p>

Above all, we want to prevent a profit-hungry\u00a0 company from destroying our mountains and our ancient history. We want to\u00a0 challenge the neocolonialist mentalities, which sacrifices rural communities\u00a0 and regions to the most unacceptable injustices in the name of the common good that they will never benefit from.\u00a0<\/p>

We will not be fooled by the \u201cEmperor\u2019s New Clothes\u201d and will not have anyone fool us\u00a0 or shame us into saying that grey is green, that mines are sustainable and we\u00a0 do not and will never regard\u00a0 mining companies as\u00a0 saviors that can bring us sustainable development.\u00a0<\/p>

We are tired of claims that mining in the\u00a0 EU is subject to the highest environmental and social standards worldwide- it has been proved it isn\u2019t and we are left vulnerable to abuse.\u00a0 In Covas do Barroso we hold the proof that laws are worth little or nothing if they are not enforced and more so if\u00a0 the government and public institutions are willing to bow and bend to the will of mining companies.<\/p>

In Covas do Barroso, we that have always lived sustainably and resent being\u00a0 sacrificed so that others\u00a0 can maintain their resource intensive way of life.\u00a0<\/p>

We would love to be able to tell you our\u00a0 story, introduce you to our community, and share with you our\u00a0 history and heritage that we fight to protect.\u00a0<\/p>

We have several proposals, but we want to hear yours as well.\u00a0<\/p>
